The book Caspian by Iranian photographer Khashayar Javanmardi captures the environmental crisis along the shores of the Caspian Sea with an activist’s perspective, blending climate anxiety with classical documentary. Growing up on its shores, Javanmardi witnessed the degradation of the world’s largest enclosed body of water due to pollution, unregulated exploitation, and climate change.

Through a series of powerful images, Caspian documents the lives of Iranian communities affected by this ecological disaster. Javanmardi’s unique approach harmonizes poetic, atmospheric visuals with urgent documentary storytelling, portraying both human resilience and the challenges they face as they struggle to survive amid environmental collapse.

Published by Loose Joints with editing by Sarah Chaplin Espenon, the book will be featured at Paris Photo and Offprint 2024 and has received several awards, including the “Eyes Wide Open” Photobook Award and a special mention for the Prix Elysée.

Zula Rabikowska, a London-based photographer and videographer specializing in documentary work about migration, identity, and LGBTQI+ communities, has launched Zula Rabikowska’s solo exhibition at Les Amarres in Paris. Her project on queer parenthood, inspired by her own experiences and heritage, explores themes of displacement, gender, and identity. The exhibition is open from November 8 to December 1, 2024, on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 4 Quai d’Austerlitz, 75013 Paris.

Big Fish and Beyond: The Staged Narratives of Morteza Niknahad

Morteza Niknahad, born in 1984 in Bandar Abbas, is an Iranian photographer and filmmaker whose work explores human experience through staged photography and personal narratives. Growing up in a coastal city by the Persian Gulf, he became fascinated with analog photography as a teenager, sparking a journey into visual storytelling. Initially focusing on filmmaking, he returned to photography in 2014, creating meticulously staged scenes inspired by his mental imagery and deep connection to the sea and his birthplace. His most renowned project, “Big Fish,” won the Wellcome Photography Prize in London for Mental Health, a reflection of his mother’s life and her struggle with a haunting illness.

Niknahad has participated in numerous group exhibitions globally, in countries such as France, Germany, China, Sweden, and Canada. He was one of the young artists invited to the prestigious 160th anniversary of the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Paris in June 2024, where he received the Jean Larivière Award for his artistic contributions. His latest solo exhibition, “Big Fish and Beyond the Seas,” held at Galerie 20 Thorigny in Paris, garnered significant attention, showcasing his ongoing exploration of memory, mental health, and human vulnerability. His works have also been featured in renowned publications like The Guardian, Le Monde, Bazaart, and BBC World.

Angela Sairaf Contemporary Photographer

Angela Sairaf is a Spain based photographer born in Porto Alegre, South Brazil. She is PhD in Techniques and Processes in Imaging (Madrid´s Complutense University) and Master of Contemporary Photography (EFTI). Received three training scholarships at the International University Menéndez Pelayo where she studied visual poetry, creative processes of a reporter and the nature of photography. Deeply studied the relationship between photography and blindness. Worked for over 15 years as a writer and photographer for important Brazilian magazines. In the 90’s, worked for a renowned modeling agency in Tokyo. Receives awards and participates in solo and group exhibitions in different countries. Frequently presents at conferences in prestigious schools of art and photography. Her work is part of the collection of MACRS – Contemporary Art Museum of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

MARKUS BRUNETTI’S “FACADES”

Markus Brunetti’s FACADES series is the result of his travels through Europe from 2005 to the present day, capturing the façades of historic cathedrals, churches and cloisters in minute detail. In the tradition of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s serial documentation of German industrialization, the front surface of each structure is recorded in a precise and regulated style allowing for typologies and comparisons. The subjects are conceived as idealized designs, or as what might be called photographic drawings on paper, similar to the architects’ or builders’ original drawings and the engravings of Old Masters.

In the East Gallery, five large-scale archival pigment prints, each measuring 10 feet tall, depict towering structures such as Notre-Dame Cathedral in Chartres and Ulm Minster in Germany. In the West Gallery, ten 70” x 60” works represent a history of architectural styles ranging from Moorish to the early Romanesque, through Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods.

To create a single work, Brunetti exhaustively explores each façade from bottom to top, taking a large number of frames over the course of a few weeks or, if necessary, a few years. Miniscule ornamentations that would otherwise be overlooked or inaccessible, such as golden mosaics in the gables of Orvieto’s Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta or sculptural details on the soaring spires of Cologne Cathedral, become vividly clear. He then assembles the individual views into his own hyper-realistic interpretation of the entire façade, stripped of all modern-day elements and suggesting three-dimensional qualities. As a result, FACADES becomes a visual encyclopedia; an in-depth study of the relationships between form, religious function and cultural history.

TOM BUTLER’S APPROPRIATION OF VICTORIAN CABINET CARDS

Splitting his time between London and Portland, Maine, Tom Butler is multi-disciplinary artist who predominantly works with paintings and drawing applying them to found victorian cabinet cards. Speaking about his work the artists explains, “I am fascinated by the process of Conspicuous Invisibility: the simultaneous human desire to both hide and perform. In a visual way, I collect memories, thresholds and hiding places and attempt to re-manufacture them. My work expresses my natural inclination towards introversion and the opposition of displaying artwork essentially about hiding.” Butler received an MFA at Slade School of Fine Art and has been showing his work in galleries since 2005.

Stefano Cerio splits his time between Rome and Paris. He began his career as a photographer at the age of 18, contributing to the Italian weekly L’Espresso. Since 2001, his interest has gradually moved towards explorative photography and video. His work increasingly focuses on the theme of representation, exploring the boundary line between vision, recounting the real and the spectator’s horizon of expectation, the staging of a possible reality that might not be true but is at least plausible His series Chinese Fun explores the dormant due to season but not abandoned, amusement parks of Shanghai, Beijing, Qingdao, and Hong Kong.
