He was preparing to go to America to continue his studies when he saw this advertisement on the second page of the information newspaper.

For Hossein Amanat, the design of the Azadi Tower was the first experience in applying all he had learned in the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Tehran, and his observations of Iranian architecture during the trips that had become common at the initiative of “Hoshang Sihun” to acquaint students with old Iranian architecture.

In the fall of 1346, Hossein Amanat received permission to continue the work, and the selection of collaborators and the search for implementation solutions for this project began. Most of the design and construction works of the Azadi Tower were entrusted to Iranian specialists. But the most complicated part of it, which was the structural calculations, was entrusted to “Arup” company, which had done the calculations for the Sydney Opera House before.

He says the following about the durability of Azadi Tower and its popularity among the people:

“Freedom Tower is designed in such a way that it focuses on the truth, essence and depth of Iranian culture. That is, it was built according to what happened to Iran throughout history and the greatness that is in the history of this country. It is true that this work was done at a time when a different political situation was ruling in Iran, but when I designed it, I was thinking about all historical periods and the future of Iran; Not to that particular political situation. Of course, I never thought that Freedom Tower would penetrate the hearts of Iranian people like this. The Freedom Tower was just like a child you give birth to and you don’t know how it will turn out in the future. This child will grow up and find a life of his own, which is no longer in your hands. Azadi Tower became the same and I think that it made a place in people’s hearts because it is very Iranian and contains the essence of Iranian culture. »

After the successful project of Azadi Tower and Sharif University Faculty Building, Tehran Cultural Heritage Building, Faculty of Business Administration, as well as the supervision and supervision of the construction of Pasargad Museum near the tomb of Cyrus the Great, Amant was also the architect and designer of a number of craft centers, schools, libraries, and even an entertainment town on the coast of the Caspian Sea. Later, by expanding his work, he also designed buildings abroad, including the central library of Sichuan University, the library building of the Iranian Embassy in Beijing, which is the most distinguished embassy of the diplomatic district in Beijing.

He said about the buildings he designed in the style of classical Greek architecture

“I saw how the classical style can fit and harmonize with the gardens around here (Haifa area). My logic is this: in modern life we are in a hurry and we don’t have time to pay attention to the details of a classical building. But the classical style makes sense for a society that lives in comfort and prosperity, a society that has enough time for meditation and prayer. “Modern buildings grew and expanded after the industrial revolution, a period when material life prevailed over spirituality, but I think beauty is an important factor in design, because beauty is very beneficial and useful for the human soul.”

It seems that Amanat felt the burden of the natural environment and geographical conditions on his shoulders more than he was concerned about implementing his architectural views in the projects he designed in the style of classical Greek architecture. At first glance, these magnificent Greek buildings may lead the viewer to think that their designer and architect simply presented an eclectic type of architecture, while the reality is something else. First of all, he has not neglected the principles of oriental architecture in his original Greek buildings, and therefore, although these projects of his at first glance remind of the classical Greek style, the details used in them indicate something else. Secondly, as he himself explicitly stated, the choice of classical style was completely conscious and necessary. However, apart from the style used in its classical Greek buildings, Amanat has always implemented the principles of traditional Iranian geometry and architecture in its modern buildings. His projects and buildings are now visible all over the world. Apart from the projects mentioned above, he has also designed other projects, some of the most important of which are: designing and building a place of worship in Western Samoa, designing several factories in Dalian, China, building several apartment complexes in Santa Monica, California, and a city block with two residential towers in San Diego, California. In all these projects, Amanat has shown a special skill in using and combining the contents of different cultures. He has received important awards for his unique designs, and at the same time, he has lectured in many educational and cultural conferences about art and architecture. Due to some of his designs, Hossein Amanat has been at the forefront of Iran’s avant-garde architects, while in a number of his other designs, he has distanced himself from avant-gardeism and moved in its opposite direction. It was said that he gained his fame and reputation for the design of the Freedom Monument (Shahiad) in Tehran. A brief introduction to Hassan Amanat’s first and most prominent design, Azadi Tower: Azadi Tower in Iran is an example of urban symbols and signs, whose distinctive architecture is the combination of pre-Islamic (Achaemenian and Sassanid) and post-Islamic architectural arches and turning it into a beautiful symbol in terms of architecture. In this plan, the architect has paid great attention to the details of the construction and the arrangement of the stones of the symbol so that in the end the parts become a whole. Freedom Tower is built as a statue and is considered as an urban symbol. This magnificent building, which is one of the cultural and artistic centers of our dear country, below we will get to know a little about the people involved and the dimensions of this project: the contractor of Azadi Tower was Map Company (Engineer Mohammad Pourfathi) and the accounting engineer was Arup and Associates. The construction period of the building started on November 11, 1348 Shamsi, and after twenty-eight months, on January 24, 1350, it was put into operation under the name of Azadi Tower, which lasted for 26 months. The masons of this building were the masters Qanbar Rahimi and Ghafar Davar Panah. The design of the building is an impression of the architecture of the ancient, Islamic period and the combination of the building with modern architecture and has unique features and designs, such that about 25,000 pieces of stone with nearly 15,000 different shapes with complex and arched surfaces have been used in its facade. They have centimeters, it has been used. The main skeleton is made of reinforced concrete. The thick and white stones of Jurqan mine (Isfahan) cover it. The main stone works, from extraction to installation, have been carried out by stone masons with taste in our country. The main entrance doors are made of different types of Hamadan granite (made of Khara stone and weighs about seven tons), as well as floor stones and fountains, etc. extracted from Kurdistan, which shows the richness of Iran’s mines. The main foundations of the building are built in an oblong shape with the dimensions of 42 x 63 meters and they are twisted with an original geometry in an order that makes it possible for the stability of the arch of the main arch in the main axis on the foundations. Currently, Mr. Amanat is working on his international projects in his office in Canada. He has been living in Canada since 1980 as a Canadian citizen.

Research and writing by Sara Shahmohammadi

Researcher: Sara Shahmohammadi

Hossein Amanat Hossein Amanat was born in Kashan in 1321, he grew up in a family that loved Iranian culture and grew up in a school of thought that says that the beauty of the world, wherever it is, belongs to the whole world and the artist should refer to all these beauties.
