This creates, the focal point of interest.<\/li>\n<li>To create the illusion of depth, gradations of value are also used.<\/li>\n<li>Areas of light and dark give a three-dimensional illusion of form to subject matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.finearttips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/leffel_a.jpg\" alt=\"Painting by David Leffel, Understanding Value and Tone for Better Painting | ArtistsNetwork.com\" width=\"415\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(\u00a92011 David Leffel)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/juliannakunstler.com\/images_art1\/value\/scale9.jpg\" alt=\"Understanding Value and Tone for Better Painting | ArtistsNetwork.com\" width=\"400\" height=\"197\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The above value scale of Denman Ross was introduced in 1907. His value terms set the standard still used today. This scale helps artists understand and identify light, mid-tones and darks more easily.<\/p>\n<p><em>Value<\/em> is independent of its <em>hue<\/em>. This is a fundamental element in the impact of visual art whether abstract or representational.<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.finearttips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Ingres-Grisaille.jpg\" alt=\"Understanding Value and Tone for Better Painting | ArtistsNetwork.com\" width=\"319\" height=\"285\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>The above example is a painting<em> \u201cen grisaille\u201d <\/em>\u2013 a painting done entirely in values of grey or another neutral greyish color. Grisaille was sometimes used for underpaintings or for oil sketches. Rubens was noted for this type of painting.<\/p>\n<p>Today, many successful artists believe in keeping a narrow value scale \u2013 limiting their composition to approximately 4 values. In this case it seems, less is more and helps create a cohesive and harmonious work.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a contrasting example of the use of values. Whistler used<em> \u2018low-key\u2019<\/em> values and Monet used<em> \u2018high-key\u2019<\/em>values and achieved dramatically different results.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.finearttips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/whistler_-mother1.jpg\" alt=\"Painting by Whistler.
