The British actor Patrick Stewart died on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, at his home in Los Angeles. He was 86. His death was announced on Thursday, 29 October, in a statement from his family and his spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, posted on his official Instagram account.

According to the statement, he died in the care of his wife, Sunny Ozell, after “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.” Stewart had not made the diagnoses public before his death.
Born Patrick Hewes Stewart in Mirfield, Yorkshire, on 13 July 1940, he acted with amateur drama societies as a teenager and left school at 15. He built his reputation over decades on the Shakespearean stage before reaching a worldwide audience as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films. He also lent his voice to animated series such as Family Guy and American Dad.
Tributes followed from across the worlds he inhabited. Hugh Jackman, who played Wolverine opposite him in Logan, wrote that he would miss him for the rest of his days; Marvel Studios and the Star Trek community also paid homage, and the producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame announced that flowers would be placed on his star.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Sunny Ozell, whom he married in 2013 in a ceremony presided over by his close friend Ian McKellen, and by his daughter Sophie and his son, the actor Daniel Stewart. Avengers: Doomsday is reported to be his final film.
