Ardeshir Mohassas was born on 18 September 1317 in Lahijan, Gilan province, and showed his intelligence and ingenuity in the matter of design since childhood. His father, who was a judge, died of a heart problem in the early years of Ardeshir’s life, and his mother, who was the companion and friend of Parvin Etsami and also had a hand in poetry, took responsibility for the painful cultivation of art. Mohassas also, because his father studied law in university and after graduating from Tehran University, he left law and went towards the same desires of his childhood, i.e. design and finally became a professor of his field, his sister Irandekht Mohassas is also an artist cartoonist and theoretician, and Ardeshir Mohassas is a cousin to Bahman Mohassas, a sculptor and painter. For many years, Mohassas designed the art and thought page of Kihan newspaper, and this was the only place where he worked regularly. He also collaborated with Kitab Juma for a while, and when Ahmed Shamlou took over the editorship of Kitab Habat, he also used Mohassas’s designs. Many books have been published by Ardeshir Mohassas and many galleries have exhibited his works, among his published books we can mention Ardeshir and his Smiles, Ardeshir and Stormy Weather, Ceremonies, etc. Mohass was particularly interested in the works of Picasso, Chagall, UNESCO, and Tenney, some of the greats of the art field, and in his pre-revolutionary works, he displayed issues related to third world countries such as hunger, colonialism, population density, injustice, and the increase in weapons, etc. Later, he also designed for the New York Times for a while. For a long time, no one knew about him in Iran because he left the country after the Islamic Revolution in Iran and lived only in the memories of the generation who remembered his years of activity in Iran. He spent all the years after the Islamic Revolution in New York until an exhibition of his works was held in Iran in the 1980s and influenced the art scene. In the last years of his life, due to Parkinson’s disease, his movement and speech abilities were greatly reduced, and he could not even participate in the commemoration ceremony that was organized for him in June 2007 in New York, and finally he passed away on the 18th of October 2007 at the age of 70. Javad Mojabi had said about him that Mohassas does not understand the meaning of fear even if it is explained to him, and he also knows the importance of Ardeshir Mohassas as the founder of modern caricature in Iran. Shamlu also compared him to Obeid and described the pen of both as winners, and he himself said about his works, I only portray what I see and cartoons are documents of an era. It is not bad to know that a book about the life and work stages of Ardeshir Mohassas has been published by Pikere Publishing House and in Golestan Honar collection.
